What is the AgeWell Health Assessment?
As we age, the importance of maintaining mobility, strength and balance becomes increasingly important for a healthy, independent life. When the healthcare system fails to control increasing chronic conditions, we are prepared to step in.
The Age Well Musculoskeletal Health Assessment is a proactive early intervention program at Alta Health, encouraging longevity within our community. It involves a Strength Test, Balance Test, Range of Motion/Flexibility Test and Functional Performance Test.
Strength Testing – The foundation of independence
Muscle strength declines by up to 8% per decade after the age of 30 – accelerating after 60.
Strength testing reveals any deficits, allowing us to implement exercises that can improve strength, which can cut the risk of falls by 2.5 times and extend independence.
Strength testing helps assess the ability to perform essential activities such as standing up from a chair, carrying groceries, and climbing stairs. Research shows that individuals with low strength are 50% more likely to need assistance with daily tasks.
Muscle strength correlates with longevity – A study published in The BMJ found that individuals with higher grip strength had a 16-32% lower risk of mortality over the course of the study, suggesting that maintaining strength is linked to longer life expectancy.
Balance Testing – Stability for safety
Falls are the leading cause of injury in older adults with 1 in 3 Australians over 65 experiencing a fall each year.
Unfortunately, most people aren’t aware of how poor their balance is until after a fall. Early prevention is key to reduce the risk of falls.
More than 75% of 70+ year old individuals experience balance disorders that impair their ability to walk and perform daily tasks. Early detection can help reduce the risk of falls and related complications.
Approximately 15% of older adults who fall will experience recurrent falls, leading to a higher chance of long-term disability and reduced quality of life. Balance testing helps identify at-risk individuals early, allowing for targeted interventions.
Range of Motion/Flexibility Testing – Move with ease
Flexibility and range of motion reduce by 25–30% after 50, making everyday tasks harder.
Limited joint mobility can affect daily tasks and increase injury risk. By assessing range of motion, we help seniors maintain flexibility, reducing the chance of falls and improving overall movement.
More than 50% of adults over 65 suffer from arthritis, leading to joint stiffness and reduced range of motion. Without proper flexibility exercises, joint mobility can worsen, making daily activities like climbing stairs or getting up from a chair difficult
Studies show that seniors who engage in regular flexibility and stretching exercises experience a 30-50% improvement in functional movement, such as reaching, bending, and lifting, which are essential for daily living.
Functional Testing – Daily tasks made easy
Older adults with mobility issues are 2-3x times more likely to develop a disability within the next two years.
Functional decline in mobility and daily activities often leads to loss of independence. Our functional tests assess your ability to perform tasks such as walking and standing, helping to prevent future disability, which impacts nearly 40% of seniors.
50% of nursing home admissions in individuals over 65 are due to a decline in functional abilities, such as difficulty walking, transferring, or performing basic self-care.
Seniors who undergo regular functional performance testing and have targeted programs experience 30-40% improvement in their ability to perform daily tasks.
